English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.
The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

Writing at Davies Lane is taught using a bespoke writing curriculum. This curriculum is based on internationally acknowledged best practice, research and knowledge of our school’s context.
As part of the writing curriculum children are taught handwriting. Cursive handwriting is taught in Reception and our aim is to have every child writing in a fluent, joint style by the end of year 2. This style is taught and modelled by teachers.
Children are taught spelling, rules, patterns and strategies explicitly and integrated across the curriculum.
Children across the school read and enjoy a range of high-quality text and these text are used to inform writing across a range of fiction and non-fiction genres. At the start of every term, in each class the children take part in a novel study. As part of the novel study, children learn to read extended text to build stamina and develop reading and comprehensions skills. These novel studies are also designed to promote the enjoyment of reading and to give the children the opportunity experience rich vocabulary.
