Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents and Carers

This autumn term, our topic for history is ‘Homes’ and our topic for geography is ‘The U.K’. We will be learning about different aspects of our local area and later exploring the wider community of the United Kingdom.  Children will be developing their map-reading skills, investigating human and natural features of Britain. We will go on a walk around our local area to explore our environment. During this term we will be looking at homes from the present and past and studying their architecture. Throughout the year we will be reading and analysing stories from our novel studies collection. In Numeracy children will be counting, calculating and understanding shape and measure.

In the spring term our topic for history is ‘Toys’. During this topic, the children will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy toys from the present and past. It will link with Science and DT where the children will be designing and creating their own toy. For Geography the topic will be ‘Weather and seasons’. Children will learn about seasons and discuss how the environment and animals change accordingly. They will also look at weather in the U.K and compare it to other countries.

In the summer term, our topic for history is ‘Holidays’ and for geography it is ‘The Coast’. Children will compare past and present sea side holidays and identify oceans and seas around the world. Our trip will be to an aquarium so the children can experience exciting underwater life.

We would like to invite parents in to the school each week as volunteers to support the children’s development of early reading and language. If you are interested in volunteering regularly, please contact the class teacher. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag everyday with their yellow reading record. We will listen to your child read every day and change their reading book once a week along with the weekly homework.

Our school policy is that homework is sent home every Friday and should be returned every Thursday, signed by parents.  You will receive a report card at the end of term to keep you informed as to how your child is progressing at school.

PE takes place twice every week. Please ensure your child keeps their PE kit in school.

We offer fruit every day for a break-time snack.

Please feel free to talk to us if you have any concerns.

Yours sincerely
