Architecture

Architecture

At Davies Lane Primary School we want all of our pupils to have access to a wide range of opportunities that will give them the best possible start in life. We believe that learning about architecture allows children to experience and explore the world around them in a way unlike other curriculum areas. It develops their understanding of human thoughts and ideas and makes links to different points in history.

Discrete teaching of Architecture takes place within our Geography and History subjects.

  • In History, we learn about the historical significance of Architecture; how it nurtured humanity and built great civilisations. We look at some of the most important buildings in the world and the people who built them; from these we take our own ideas and apply them to modern day issues.
  • In Geography, we learn about how Architecture can be used to help us create a better world. How can we help to prevent coastal erosion? How can we save the rainforest? We look at modern examples of buildings that are doing just this and look to design and build our own.
By learning about Architecture, children explore key concepts that are embedded in many of the statutory curriculum subjects such as;

  • Design and Technology: through the design process of creating a new building and creating models from construction materials.
  • Citizenship: children will be asked how they will create a better place for the community; whether that will be by building a new school or designing a new London skyscraper.
  • Computing: through digital design and the research of existing buildings and ideas.
  • Science: working with a range of materials and selecting the
  • most suitable. Building more environmentally friendly and
  • efficient buildings.
  • PSHE: working in groups and building key communication and
  • team working skills.
  • Maths: using a variety of measurements and equations to build
  • accurate representations of their designs.
  • English: researching important architects and designers and the
  • buildings they created.

Through Architecture we want out pupils to not only learn about the art of designing and constructing buildings but also the historical significance of buildings throughout time and how they are a testament to what humanity can achieve. Not only in the physical building itself but also in the ideas that they hold; for example schools giving education to all or St Paul’s cathedral being a place of worship for everybody.

We aim to excite our pupil’s curiosity and inspire them to design and build better than anyone before. Our teachers help the pupil’s to develop techniques of enquiry and discovery and stimulate creative thought. The pupils learn how Architecture is important to them,
their community, nature and the world.

The aims of our Architecture curriculum are to enable children to:
  • Study important works of Architecture and those who built
  • them.
  • Design and create answers to global problems.
  • Understand Architectures important place in history.
  • Understand how Architecture effects every part of their life.
  • Inspire them to become the next generation of global  architects.
